As a mom of two young children, it can often be hard to find anytime for myself. I love my kids more than life itself, but sometime I wish I had a little more time to focus on the things that I like, like fitness, for example.
After struggling to find time to keep fit, I started thinking about how I could keep active while looking after the kids. It isn’t always easy finding time for ourselves, but exercise is one area that no matter what, we shouldn’t skip. That’s why I came up with some simple ideas that allow me to exercise while I take care of the kids.
In case you are in the same boat, I thought I would share my tips for how I stay in shape while I have the kids. I’ll admit sometimes it can feel impossible, but with these ideas you should find it a little easier to fit exercise into the day.
Be active as a family
Okay, so you may not get that time to yourself you wanted, but being active as a family is a great way to ensure you keep in shape. Instead of spending weekends in front of the television or traipsing around theme parks, get active.
Take part in family activity days, go for family bike rides, go for a swim – there are so many things you can do. Keeping fit doesn’t have to be boring, it can be as fun as you make it.
Go to mom and child exercise classes
As a mom finding time to exercise can be hard, so why not go to a mom and child exercise class? These classes tend to be held outside in places like parks, where you can exercise while the little ones play.
These classes are ideal for busy moms, as they give us the time to exercise without having to worry about our little ones. If you have a friend who is also into exercise, perhaps you could invite her along, and then your kids could play together.
One of the best ways to stay fit as a family is through hiking. Kids love adventure, and hiking is the perfect activity to turn into an adventure. Instead of just walking to the local park or along a track, choose routes that are fun and interesting.
If you have a smartphone, you could download the geocaching app and geocache with the kids as you hike. Geocaching is so simple but is also so much fun. For kids, geocaching while on a walk add some fun to the activity and makes it more of an adventure.
Just make sure that if you are going to go hiking, that both you and the kids have the correct footwear. I suffer from high arches, which means that when I walk for long periods I end up with pain in my feet. So I always ensure I have a pair of the best walking shoes for women with high arches.
Don’t drive everywhere
One of the easiest ways to keep fit is by swapping from driving everywhere to walking or cycling. Instead of driving the kids to school, why not cycle there together? Instead of driving to the supermarket, why not walk there?
Making small changes like these are fantastic for keeping active and increasing your fitness. It might take a little more effort, but using your feet instead of driving is what you need to do to keep fit and in good shape.
As a mom, I know how difficult it can be to find the time to exercise and keep fit. But by following these simple tips, you can keep healthy and in good shape.
