Detox is a bit of a buzzword these days. People want to detox after a heavy weekend, holiday, or in time for a special event. However, the detoxes around today are often unsafe – they might make you lose a bit of weight, but they’re so bad for you! If you want a safe detox that won’t cost you a fortune, try this instead:
Cut Out Junk
Stop buying junk food. Cut it out for as long as you’d like this detox to last. Junk includes chocolate, sweets, crisps, microwave meals, fizzy drinks, etc. Be smart about food choices.
Cut Down on Starchy Carbs
If you’re already quite good when it comes to your food choices, you might not eat many starchy carbs in the first place. However, this kind of carb can cause us to hold on to fat more. Bread, oats, rice, potatoes, and similar carbs count as starchy. Non starchy carbs include vegetables and fruit. You should never cut out carbs. You just need to be sensible about them!
Drink 3 Litres of Water a Day
3 Litres of water a day will help your body to flush out toxins. It’ll clear up your skin, give you energy, and have so many other great effects on your too! Slowly up your intake if you’re not there yet. Don’t add squash or anything to your water. If you need to, add fruit to make it taste nicer.
Drink Green Tea
Green tea is another great drink to include in your detox. Green herbal detox tea is especially useful. A couple of cups a day and you should feel and look much better! Don’t just use green tea to detox either. Include it in your regular diet and you’ll get lots of benefits from it.
Exercise will support your new healthy diet and sweat out some toxins too. Even if you can only manage a couple of walks a week, get out there and do it! It’s better than sitting around all day.
Cut Out Caffeine
Caffeine can make the body hold on to fat, and stop it from getting adequate sleep. Both of those things are something you don’t want during a detox. Cut out coffee and any energy drinks you have. You might feel a little shaky at first, but you should feel great afterwards.
Eat Plenty of Protein and Healthy Fats
Although you’re keeping starchy carbs low, make sure you eat lots of protein and healthy fats. They’ll keep you nice and full and you won’t burn away at your muscle.
Keep Sugars Low
Try to keep your sugars low. You’ll naturally get some from veg and fruit, but avoid fruit juices and other sugary things. Stay away from food and drink containing the artificial sweetener aspartame too!
Monitor your progress so you know how your detox is working for you. Write down how you feel, look, etc. This way you can see if your detox is really working. If not, what can you do to help it along? If you’re determined, you can easily detox without putting yourself through hell!
